Friday to Sunday, without rushing

Two nights on Scugog Island: our weekend plan

We built this around the times the hotel publishes and the distances our model measured. Swap pieces as you like; the only fixed points are 4 p.m. and 11 a.m.

Friday: when should we leave the city?

Check-in starts at 4 p.m., and from Union Station the drive takes somewhere between an hour on empty roads and 80 minutes in our cautious model, before traffic. Leave at 2:30 and you arrive with daylight left in most of the year; leave at 5 and you are in the Friday crawl on the 401. If you can, go early.

4 pmCheck inID, a card for the pre-authorisation, the dog's leash

The person checking in must be 19 or older with photo ID and a home address. Park for free, take the bags up and, if you have asked for the garden side, look out of the window to see whether you got it.

5 pmStretch your legsThe gym, or a short drive to the water

The hotel gym is there if the drive left you stiff. Otherwise, in the light months, drive the 14 minutes to Palmer Park and walk the start of the Millennium Trail by the lake.

7 pmDinner without the carWater's Edge on site, or the weekend buffet from 3:30

On Friday the buffet runs from 3:30 to 10 p.m. and Water's Edge is open to all ages. Nobody has to drive after dinner, which is the point of staying.

Saturday: town or island first?

Town in the morning, island in the afternoon, a show or a quiet evening at night. That order keeps the drives short and puts the busiest part of Port Perry before lunch, when shops are open and parking is easy.

9 amCoffee in Port PerryThe Piano Café or a bakery on the tourism list

Breakfast is not listed with the room, so drive over the causeway for coffee and something baked. Hank's Pastries and Louis Café & Dessert are on the tourism office's list.

10 amThe waterfront trail and Queen Street5 km of lakeside path, then the shops

Walk a stretch of the waterfront trail, look at the old grain elevator from 1873, then browse Queen Street: vintage, tartan, Scandinavian fashion, Indigenous art.

1 pmLunch, then back acrossA pub lunch, or a picnic from the fridge

Jester's Court and The Lakeview Pub are on the list for lunch. Or pack a picnic in the suite's fridge on Friday night.

2 pmThe island's afternoonMuseum village in season, the marina, island shops

From May to September, Scugog Shores Museum Village is about ten minutes from the hotel, with guided tours Wednesday to Sunday until 4 p.m. Out of season, visit Adawegamig and Redman's Antique Barn, or rent a boat at the marina in summer.

4 pmA show at The NestOn free-show Saturdays: sets at 4 and 7 p.m.

On 14 and 28 November 2026 there are free tribute concerts. Doors open 30 minutes before each set; bring only a small clutch or a clear bag. The 7 p.m. set leaves time for an early dinner.

8 pmDinner and a slow endWater's Edge, or a taproom in town with a driver

If someone is happy to drive, Old Flame's Port Perry taproom lists Saturday hours until 10 p.m. If not, dinner on site and an early night.

Sunday: what fits before 11 a.m.?

8 amA lake morningMist on the water on a calm day

Early morning is the quiet hour on the marsh. Keep an eye out for a heron, the bird the property is named after; no promises, herons keep their own schedule.

10 amPack and check out by 11Late check-out only if the desk agrees

The rules allow a request for a later check-out, at the hotel's discretion and possibly for a fee. Ask the evening before.

NoonA last stop on the way homeA farm or winery in season, or a quick drive home

In summer and autumn, call ahead and stop at a farm or winery; in winter, the ski hills at Dagmar and Lakeridge are about 35 minutes away. Then the drive back, ideally before the Sunday rush on the 401.

What if we only have one night?

Do Friday as above, swap Saturday for a morning in Port Perry, and drive home after lunch. Or reverse it: a Saturday arrival, the 7 p.m. show, and a Sunday morning walk by the lake.
