Scugog Island EscapeGreat Blue Heron, reviewed independently

The short answer, then the long one

Our verdict: book it for the island, not for the amenities

We have read the hotel's published pages and the official pages around it. Here is how we would explain it to a friend planning two nights away from the city.

Should we book it?

Yes, if your idea of a good weekend is a modern room, a lake, a small town with a brewery and a bakery, and perhaps a free concert. No, if you need a pool, a spa or a resort that keeps you busy without leaving the building. That is the whole verdict in two sentences. The rest of this page is the reasoning, and the places where we are guessing less than the hotel's marketing does.

What does it do well?

It is new, and it was built for this spot

The hotel opened in November 2021. The local paper that covered the opening described a four-storey building of about 67,500 square feet, mostly wood, built by Matheson Constructors of Aurora, and designed to echo the casino it stands beside. New buildings are not automatically good ones, but a 2021 room usually means modern heating and air conditioning, solid Wi-Fi and fewer surprises behind the bathroom door. The room pages on the official site support that: climate-controlled heating and cooling, blackout drapes and a 55-inch TV in every type.

The practical things are free

Self-parking is free. Wi-Fi is free. The gym is included. That sounds minor until you price a weekend in a city hotel where the car alone costs more than dinner. Out here, the car is how almost everyone arrives, and nobody charges you for leaving it.

The Nest gives a Saturday night a shape

The event hall opened in January 2024 and holds close to 800 people. The free tribute concerts it hosts are an easy plan: two sets on the same day, one at 4 p.m. and one at 7 p.m., so you can pick the one that fits dinner. For November 2026 the operator lists a U2 tribute on the 14th and a Fleetwood Mac tribute on the 28th.

Pets are welcome, with clear rules

Many small-town inns cannot take a dog. This hotel takes up to two cats or dogs per room, each up to 50 lb, and it publishes the fees and rules in full. If your weekend includes a four-legged guest, that alone may decide it. See the pet page.

What should we know before we commit?

No pool or spa is listed

The official hotel page lists a fitness centre and a business centre and nothing else under leisure. Some general house rules shared by the operator's hotels mention pools, but that text covers all of them. We found no pool for this one, so we do not promise it.

The casino is part of the building's life

The casino is open 24 hours and it is 19+. Children may stay in the hotel with you, but they cannot enter the gaming floor or eat at restaurants on it. If you are travelling as a family, read children and the 19+ rule before you go, because it shapes where you can have dinner together.

You need a car, or a plan

We could not find a scheduled bus that crosses the causeway to the hotel. GO trains reach Oshawa, about 42 km away by road, and from there a taxi or a rideshare is the realistic link. That is fine for most weekenders and awkward for anyone who does not drive.

Room views are a wish, not a promise

Every room type is listed as "casino view or garden view". Neither is the lake, and the hotel does not let you choose in advance on its page. If a quieter garden side matters, our form lets you ask; we pass it on, but we cannot guarantee it either.

Our reading of the published facts, 31 October 2026. Not a rating, and nobody paid for it.

Who will like it most?

Couples from Toronto or Durham who want two nights out without a long drive. Friends coming up for a show at The Nest. Anyone visiting family in Port Perry who needs a proper hotel room rather than a spare bed. People bringing a dog. And business travellers who need a desk, a 24-hour business centre and a small meeting room for up to fifteen or twenty people.

And who should look elsewhere?

Families planning a pool weekend. Anyone who wants to stay right in the middle of a walkable downtown. Travellers without a car who are not ready to pay for a taxi from Oshawa. For them, the honest suggestion is to stay closer to a GO station, or, in Port Perry itself, at one of the heritage inns the township's tourism site lists.
