A slow afternoon off the island

Farms, fruit wine and a lager brewed in town

Scugog is farm country, and several farms make something to drink. Here is a list built from the township's tourism pages and the hotel's own suggestions, with what each place says about itself.

Which places should we know about?

min
Ocala WineryHigh Point Road, Scugog · about 27 minutes by car

A winery and wedding venue in the township, named by both the hotel and the tourism office. Check its own site for tasting hours, which change with the seasons.

Applewood Farm & WineryFruit wines, cider and mead from its own farm

A family-run farm winery that says it has made fruit wines, cider and mead for more than 26 years, from fruit and honey grown on the farm and on neighbouring farms. It describes itself as family-friendly and fully accessible. In season there has been pick-your-own lavender, mulberries and a corn maze. Hours vary by season, so call ahead, and watch for detour signs: when we checked on 31 October 2026, the winery's site warned that bridge work had blocked access from the west.

LagerOld Flame Brewing Co.Perry and Mary Streets, downtown Port Perry

A brewery built on slow, German-style lagering and a taproom furnished with old pieces. It has a second location in Newmarket, but the flagship is on the corner of Perry and Mary Streets, which inspired one of its beers and a stage musical performed at the brewery.

CiderTwo Blokes Cider and Slabtown CiderTwo cider makers on the hotel's and the township's lists

The tourism office lists Two Blokes Cider; the hotel's list adds Slabtown Cider. Both are worth checking for opening days before you drive out.

FarmLavender Blu, Willowtree Farm and moreLavender fields, produce, play areas

Scugog Tourism's farm page names Willowtree Farm for interactive play areas and fresh produce, the lavender at Lavender Blu, and local goods at Hinterland Growers and Nature's Bounty. Most of these are seasonal; summer and early autumn are the safe bets.

Can we make our own?

Lakeview Beer & Wine, also on the tourism list, lets you make your own beer and wine. It is a project for a longer stay rather than a weekend, but it makes a good story.

Who drives?

That is the planning question. Wineries and the brewery are spread across the township, the roads are rural and dark at night, and Ontario's drink-driving rules are strict. Pick a designated driver, buy bottles to open in the room, or keep the brewery for an evening when you can walk back to a Port Perry inn.

The hotel's Standard Two Queen and King Accessible rooms have a mini fridge; the King Suite has a full-size fridge, plates and cutlery, which makes a tasting picnic easy.
